22 Questions To Ask Before
Choosing An Orthodontist

  1. Did you graduate #1 in your dental class?
  2. After I’m educated by you and your staff, will I fully duplicate my problems and the treatment that is needed, which I understand is the key to a successful result of any child or adult since orthodontics takes time and is not an overnight procedure?
  3. Do all of your staff have their Florida X-ray certificates and Orthodontic
    assistant certificates
    ?
  4. Do you have a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics (Braces) or only a certificate I Orthodontics?
  5. Are you Board Certified as a Diplomate of Orthodontics?  Did you take the tests during the final 3rd phase of examinations that addressed your ability to be able to do early treatment to 7 year olds and pass?
  6. Can I watch your staff use gloves, clean the dental chairs and clean and sterilize instruments so I know it’s safe in your office for me or my child?
  7. Do you do lower jaw growth on 7 year olds without the use of headgears, Bionators or the bulky metal device called a Herbst appliance?
  8. Can you make impressions of my mouth used to make study models in under 15 seconds or less so that I nor my child have less of a chance of throwing up?
  9. Have you made at least 120 in-house videos used to train your staff to be their best and so that they are standard – each patient will get the same care from each staff member since they were all equally trained by the doctor?
  10. Have you been given a top world research award by the American Association of Orthodontists?
  11. Do you have a study club where you teach over 25 general dentists how to recognize patient’s straight teeth problems, chewing problems and bite problems in their offices?
  12. Do you know what is like to have braces as an adult? Have you ever had braces? Have you ever had Invisalign® treatment?
  13. Are you the first Orthodontist to be able to glue on a permanent retainer wire on the back of lower front teeth in the United States when it was said it couldn’t be done?
  14. Have you written over 480 documents to help patients and orthodontic staff to know more and make their life easier?
  15. Do you spend at least 1.5 hours on each new patient’s x-rays, photos and models studying them like you were trained in school to do?
  16. When you study a new patient’s x-rays, models and photos, do you just jot a few notes down about what the problems are and what the treatment should be or do you list out every problem where there could be as many as 35 problems a patient has?
  17. Do you write down the steps to the patient’s treatment with the number of months it should take for each step and then try to hit those targets during the patient’s treatment?
  18. Do you mind telling me how braces are put on in a text book manner so that I know the braces were put on correctly?
  19. Can you tell me how you correct a “deep bite” within 6-8 months as the first step to a 1-2 year braces treatment? Deep bite is defined as the upper teeth overlap vertically the lower teeth so when one bite’s down, you can’t see the lower teeth.
  20. Will you tell me my child is not brushing and flossing their teeth with braces correctly and show me how to correct this? Or, will you just tell me gently “try to brush better” while the plaque is permanently damaging me child’s teeth causing white marks permanently on the enamel and the gums to all swell up?
  21. Do you have videos that show me and my child how they should floss and brush their teeth in a manner that really works?
  22. Do you have custom made handouts to give adults or children for each procedure and appliance that you use on them during treatment so they fully can read and understand more about what’s going on?
